Mission Statement

The Green Infrastructure Alliance of Tallahassee (GIATALLY) is a grassroots organization committed to the effective installation, maintenance and optimization of Green Infrastructure in the Big Bend Region.

What is Green Infrastructure

Green Infrastructure is a relatively new term in the world of water resources and a term that includes a broad range of low impact development best management practices and tools to treat and/or reduce stormwater runoff and help keep our lakes, rivers and oceans clean. Green Infrastructure is typically small in size and easily placed on residential properties and within dense developed urban areas. Green Infrastructure practices include everything from rain gardens, to rain barrels, to vegetated buffers, to inverted landscape islands, to even mulch ... just to name a few.

Program Elements

GIATALLY seeks to bring together individuals, professionals and institutions to support four core elements of effective Green Infrastructure: Education, Installation, Maintenance & Optimization

Education

A successful Green Infrastructure program must have a strong educational commitment. GIATALLY seeks to connect audiences (classrooms, HOAs, scouts, etc.) with a network of willing teachers and advisors armed with relevant curriculum and resources.
  1. Audience
  2. Teachers
  3. Teacher Advisors
  4. Curriculum/Resources

Installation

A successful Green Infrastructure program must have ... wait for it ... actual Green Infrastructure (GI). For this program element GIATALLY seeks to identify and connect GI designers and professionals with willing installation labor and suitable locations.
  1. GI Designers
  2. GI Installers
  3. GI Locations

Maintenance

Even the best designed Green Infrastructure (GI) must be maintained. As  such GIATALLY seeks to connect constructed green infrastructure locations with organizations and individuals willing to help maintain and monitor them.
  1. GI Maintainers
  2. GI Monitors/Evaluators

Optimization

GIATALLY considers the entire life cycle of Green Infrastructure. All too often infrastructure is installed to much fanfare and ballywho, but over the course of time and continued neglect becomes an ineffective eyesore. GIATALLY views a healthy continuous life cycle of infrastructure as having the following components:
  1. Design
  2. Build
  3. Maintain
  4. Evaluate
  5. Return to Step 1 & OPTIMIZE
