Stabilizing a Drainage Flume w/ Erosion Matting

Picture
1. High velocity stormwater flow was causing scour & erosion within the drainage flume into the TAPP rain garden. As a result frequent maintenance was required and sediment accumulated quickly in the garden.
Picture
2. The flume was raked and cleaned to ensure continuos slope to the bottom of the garden & washout areas filled in with compacted soil..
Picture
3. A mixture of pine straw, leaves and small twigs were applied along the flume in a thin layer.
Picture
4. The biodegradable matting was rolled down the length of the flume.
Picture
5. Small slit cut in matting and underlying plant pulled through. Cut made parallel to flow path.
Picture
6. Shallow trench dug at top of the flume to bury the first portion of the matting  to help anchor the mat & make flow transition smooth.
Picture
7. Ground staples used to secure matting to ground. Staples placed in rows every 3-5 feet with at least 4 staples per row (1 at top and toe of each side of flume)
Picture
8. A final layer of straw and mulch added on top of the matting.

... & Voila! The stabilized flume.
